Linen is one of the oldest fibrous plants, with a history spanning thousands of years. Learn about its origins, how it's cultivated, its characteristic properties, and why – alongside lyocell and cotton – we chose it for our bedding collections.
Cultivation of linen and processing its fibers into linen yarn
The linen used in Lejaan comes from France. This is where the climatic and soil conditions are ideal for its cultivation. Importantly, it is a low-maintenance plant that does not require large amounts of nutrients, making it a sustainable raw material. Sown in spring, due to its rapid growth (up to approx. 4 meters in 3 months), it is harvested already in summer. The entire plant is processed in such a way that fibers are obtained from both the stems and roots.
After harvesting, linen is spread out in fields, where it is exposed to moisture, sun, and wind. This process, called retting, leads to the decomposition of pectins (natural plant substances that act as a binder connecting fibers in the stems), which allows them to be separated. Then, the fibers are mechanically combed and subjected to a spinning process to obtain yarn used for weaving linen.

Characteristic properties and main advantages of linen
If you are looking for a material that is ideal for bedding due to its properties, linen is a great choice. It stands out for its excellent thermoregulatory properties: in winter, it helps maintain warmth, while in summer, it effectively wicks away moisture and provides a pleasant cooling sensation. It is also naturally resistant to high temperatures and intensive use, which translates into its durability and ease of care. Linen does not accumulate electrostatic charges and is a hypoallergenic material.
It has many advantages, but it also has some less favorable features, such as a greater susceptibility to wrinkles or a more noticeable texture. However, these can be effectively balanced by combining it with other fibers - such as lyocell or cotton.
Combination of linen, lyocell, and cotton
At Lejaan, we decided to use the well-known and proven properties of linen, enriching it with the addition of lyocell and cotton to achieve an even better effect. TENCEL™ Lyocell, made from eucalyptus wood cellulose, gives fabrics exceptional softness and smoothness and reduces their susceptibility to wrinkles. Cotton, on the other hand, facilitates care. Thanks to this combination, we retain the natural advantages of linen, such as strength and temperature regulation ability, while minimizing its less desirable properties.
